The Mystic NativityFestivals
A CD with vocal tracks for listening to & learning, plus backing tracks for dances & performances, is user-friendly for all teachers & pupils! Musical styles include classical, rock, jazz, folk & part-singing.
Ages: 7 to 14, Duration: 40 to 60 minutes
This work is inspired by Botticelli’s Renaissance painting, 'The Mystic Nativity' – on display at the National Gallery, London.
A sung narration introduces the seven Nativity scenes - 'The Annunciation', 'The Journey to Bethlehem', 'The Birth', 'The Shepherds', 'The Wise Men' and 'The Celebration'. Characters in each scene perform a song and dance, each in a different musical style. They enter the stable in turn, making a final tableau based on The Mystic Nativity painting. Choruses of animals, angels and shepherds are positioned behind and to the side.
This moving musical can be performed as a choral work or with a script for a more ambitious dramatic production. Colourful costumes are inspired by those in Boticelli's painting - angels in brown, pink and white robes, and Mary in an extra large blue gown, depicting her importance. A slide of this beautiful picture makes an effective backdrop.
