About Debbie Campbell
As a primary school teacher and director of children’s theatre, I am constantly impressed by the capabilities of children. They learn scripts, songs and dances in a flash – as long as the material is inspiring and memorable. Otherwise, their attention quickly wanders! Therefore, my pupils' involvement plays a vital part during the composition process.
My musicals are based on the core-curriculum subjects - Science, Geography, History, Literature, Music & Drama, Art, Design, Social & Health Education. I wrote five Environmental musicals for WWF. I begin by researching the material to ensure the content is informative as well as entertaining. This provides the inspiration for the script and lyrics. I try to include a wide variety of musical styles in the songs and dances - classical, jazz, pop, Folk etc.
Cast sizes are flexible, with equally-distributed parts for all ages and abilities in primary and secondary schools, and theatre groups.
After a great deal of fine-tuning, the musical is ready to be performed, and my pupils rise to the occasion – usually at the 11th hour! As soon as the applause ends they want to know what show we're doing next...
